What began as Decoration Day in 1868, in honor of fallen Civil War soldiers, has evolved to become Memorial Day an occasion to commemorate all Americans who died in military service to their country. We still decorate soldiers’ graves today, when a new generation of war dead has given Memorial Day a solemn new meaning for millions of Americans.
Thousands of members of the U.S. Armed Forces will spend this Memorial Day serving around the globe. Learn how others are honoring their work, showing appreciation for their service, and supporting their families, and discover ways to observe the holiday in your own way. |
